Mortal Kombat vs. DC Game (My Thoughts On The Controversy)

Well it has been revealed that the next Mortal Kombat game will feature DC characters. That announcement has brought about mixed emotions from Mortal Kombat and DC fans alike. Some love the idea and eagerly look forward to it while others feel it is an awful idea that could destroy the MK franchise. Here’s my take on the situation:

When Greg gave me a call to inform me about this shocking revelation my first reaction was shear excitement. For me being able to play a game that features both Sub-Zero and Batman brings about the same feeling I had when I learned that Sonic The Hedgehog and Solid Snake would be appearing together in Super Smash Brothers Brawl. It is that inherent joy that people get in seeing their favorite things interacting.

But after that initial excitement my mind then began to mull over the possible problems that can come about when attempting to mash together the MK and DC universes. Especially considering that the MK universe is a mess right now as it is after the events of Armageddon. Yet before I allowed such possible problems to taint my view on this game, I stepped back and reminded myself that the game has the blessing of both Midway and DC. I am confident that both companies will do their best to ensure that all the characters involved are treated property. Ed Boon and the rest of the MK team surely didn’t just rush into this idea; they obviously have some idea for a plot to make the crossover worthwhile.

Ultimately this game is a fan service and there is nothing wrong with that in my opinion. I do believe though that after this game Midway should step away from crossovers for a while and work on re-establishing the MK Universe.

What are your thoughts on Ed Boon declaring the game will have a teen rating? A teen rating pretty much excludes fatalities, and Mortal Kombat isn’t really Mortal Kombat without em.

I understand how the notion of an MK game with a T rating is unsettling to many fans. But I can honestly say that it doesn’t worry me. I trust Ed Boon because I believe that nobody else on the planet understands the MK franchise better then him. If he feels that the MK vs. DC game needs a T rating to properly tell the story then I support him on that call.

I look at it as a statement that there will have more of an emphasis on story and less on extreme gore. In my opinion that is a good thing and should ultimately bring the best out of all the characters featured in the game. Fans need not worry about a complete abandoning of MK’s signature gore as I am confident it will be returning in full force with the next MK only game.

I honestly don’t mind the idea of the rating being T, but I do find it a bit hard to picture what exactly Superman’s M rated fatality would be like…
