Comic Book Review: Fantastic Four #557

I was quite pleased with the latest issue of Marvel’s favorite super powered family. Not only is it the end of this horrible story arc but it also has a surprise appearance at the end that got me excited for the next issue and has some of that T+ material we’ve all come to love. Continue reading after the break for spoilers and whatnot.

You remember that CAP robot that was causing all sorts of havok? You know, the one that the Avengers, the New Avengers, the X-Men, and a handful of other capes couldn’t take down. Well Reed Richards shows up and kicks its ass in a few seconds. Reed dons his Anti-Galactus suit and destroys the thing in one punch. The only reason CAP didn’t scrap him and his suit was because Reed guessed that the robot was programmed not to hurt him since it’s creator, Alyssa Moy, is in love with him, and he was right.

This whole storyline involving CAP has boggled my mind. It just does not make sense how a robot capable of defeating every single super on earth just came out of nowhere for a four issue story arc. The thing freaking destroyed nuclear stockpiles and military bases all over the planet and it would have never been defeated if it wasn’t programed not to hurt Reed.

In an attempt to rectify their continuity the writers had the whole incident become a secret. In a one page follow up we see a meeting between President George W. Bush and several of his advisors including Condoleezza Rice, in which they say how the governments of the world are willing to “keep a lid” on the situation because they don’t want to risk having the creation of Nu-World get out. Just when I was hoping Nu-World would end with this story arc as well as CAP.

In T+ related news, Johnny comes back to his apartment after his fight with CAP to find his new super villain girlfriend naked on his bed covered in stolen money. As you can guess the bills of course are strategically placed to keep it T+. The fact that the money is stolen just makes it that much hotter.

The book ends with a great cliffhanger ending that leaves me anxious to get the next issue. Ben comes back to the Baxter building and is standing in the lobby talking to Franklin and Valeria’s new nanny when the elevator doors are smashed open… and a very beat up and injured looking Dr. Doom comes out. How exactly he got into the building is beyond me. You think the security guard sitting in the lobby with his feet up on his console reading a Sports Illustrated would have a Polaroid of Dr. Doom under a little label that says “Do Not Admit”, but whatever, good to see him come back.

So it has come to my attention that Mark Millar placed a link to this post on his forum. Holy crap. To have a post of mine be recognized by him is an incredible honor. I feel rather bad that this post isn’t exactly my most thought out and well written review. From now on I will do my best do make sure my continuing Fantastic Four coverage is as fantastic as the books. (I’m still going to complain about stuff if it aggravates me, though, it’s in my nature.) -VaultDweller13
